What Is Blackthorn?
Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) is a small, twisted tree or hedge, native to Ireland and common across the countryside. It’s famous for its dense, tough wood, dark bark, and menacing thorns—which are razor-sharp until trimmed and sanded.

In Irish folklore, blackthorn is both protective and mystical. It was said to ward off evil, and some tales claimed fairies used blackthorn thickets as portals between worlds. To cross a blackthorn hedge was to enter the unknown.
It also featured in banshee stories and superstitions, often linked to curses, magic, or defiance.
