Traditional Irish stick maker workshop with handcrafted blackthorn walking sticks and shillelaghs in production

Made by Aidan and His Partners

We’re a small group of Irish makers, headed by Aidan. Every winter, from November to early February, we go out and cut blackthorn and hazel in the Midlands of Ireland. The branches then sit in our farm shed for one to two years until they’re properly seasoned.

After that, every Irish shillelagh is shaped, de-thorned and finished by hand with boiled linseed oil. No two are the same, and the stick in the photos is the one we send you.

  • Blackthorn Shillelaghs

The classic Irish shillelagh. Dark, knuckled and very hard, with knob, L and root ball handles.

  • Hazel Shillelaghs

Lighter and smooth, with no thorns. A favourite for long walks.

Trusted by Irish Stick Fighters

Our shillelaghs are endorsed by Bernard Leddy, the world-renowned fighter and chief of the Doyle system of bataireacht, the Irish martial art of stick fighting. Members of his club regularly come to us for their sticks. A shillelagh that’s trusted for fighting will see you through a lifetime of walking.

Irish Shillelagh FAQs

What is a shillelagh?

A shillelagh is a traditional Irish stick, usually made from blackthorn, with a heavy knob or handle at the top. For centuries Irishmen carried them for walking and for protection. Today they’re bought as walking sticks, gifts and family heirlooms.

Who makes your shillelaghs?

Aidan and his partners, a small group of Irish makers. We cut, season and finish every stick ourselves in Ireland.

How long does it take to make a shillelagh?

Up to two years. Most of that is seasoning: the wood has to dry slowly in our shed until it’s down to about 12% moisture. Only then is it shaped and finished.

Do you ship Irish shillelaghs to the USA?

Yes. We post from Dublin to the USA, Canada and worldwide. Duties are included in the price, so there’s nothing extra to pay on delivery.

Is a shillelagh a walking stick?

It can be both. Most of our shillelaghs are made to be walked with every day, while the shorter, heavier ones are more for the traditional look.
