Why Maintenance Matters
Blackthorn is famously tough, but it’s still natural wood. With changing seasons and regular use, your stick needs the same respect you’d give any fine handcrafted item.
A small bit of care each year will keep it looking sharp, feeling smooth, and standing strong.

1. Clean It Gently
Skip the harsh chemicals. To clean your stick:
-
Wipe it down with a soft, damp cloth (just water)
-
Dry it immediately with a soft, dry towel
-
Never soak it or leave it wet
If there’s mud or debris from a hike, gently brush it off with a soft-bristled brush.
2. Oil It Occasionally
Your blackthorn stick may benefit from a light coat of boiled linseed oil or beeswax polish once or twice a year. This:
-
Keeps the wood hydrated
-
Prevents cracking
-
Enhances its natural shine
Apply with a cloth and rub in a circular motion. Let it absorb, then buff lightly.
3. Avoid Extreme Temperatures
Don’t leave your stick:
-
Sitting in direct sunlight for hours
-
Next to a radiator or fireplace
-
In a freezing garage or damp basement
Like any hardwood, blackthorn can warp or crack if mistreated. Store it upright in a moderate, dry environment.

4. Inspect It Annually
Give your stick a once-over every few months:
-
Are there any cracks in the shaft?
-
Is the handle still secure?
-
Do the rubber ferrules (if added) need replacing?
If your stick is finished with brass or silver, polish gently with a jewelry cloth to maintain shine.
5. Use It With Pride
Blackthorn is made for use—not just display. If you're walking with it, hiking trails, or bringing it along for support—it’s doing its job.
Scratches, scuffs, and slight wear over time just add to the story.
