What is a Shillelagh?
The shillelagh (pronounced shuh-lay-lee) is steeped in Irish folklore and history. Traditionally, it's a short, stout stick with a knobbed head, often used as a weapon in Irish stick-fighting (bataireacht) or carried as a badge of pride.
Most are between 18–24 inches long, made from blackthorn wood, and finished with a rich, oiled sheen.

What is an Irish Walking Stick?
An Irish walking stick, often also crafted from blackthorn, is usually longer and slimmer, designed for support on walks or hikes. Unlike the shillelagh, it's more functional than combative—but still strong and beautifully handmade.
They often feature natural knots, hand-carved handles, and brass or rubber tips.
Can a Shillelagh Be Used for Walking?
Technically? You could, but it’s not ideal.
The short length means you’ll be hunched over, and the thicker weight isn’t built for balance. Shillelaghs are best carried as a ceremonial or symbolic piece, whereas walking sticks are designed for comfort and mobility.
